True COGS
About This Calculator
Importing goods into Indonesia involves many steps. Importers must account for customs duties, taxes, port charges, customs clearance, local transport, and a range of compliance related expenses that can significantly affect profitability.
The Indonesia Import Cost Calculator helps businesses estimate the true landed cost of imported goods before placing an order or shipping a container. It is designed to provide a more realistic view of total import costs and help businesses make better sourcing and pricing decisions.
What Does the Calculator Include?
The calculator estimates import costs based on:
- FOB product value
- Shipment weight
- International freight costs
- Exchange rates
- Import duty (Bea Masuk)
- Import VAT (PPN)
- Import Income Tax (PPh 22)
- Customs clearance fees
- Port handling charges
- Local transportation
- Additional operational expenses
The result is an estimated landed cost and True COGS (Cost of Goods Sold) for the shipment.
Import Duty & Tax Calculations
The calculator allows users to model the primary taxes and duties commonly applied to imports entering Indonesia.
Import Duty (Bea Masuk)
Import duty varies depending on the HS code, country of origin, and any applicable trade agreements.
Users can adjust the duty rate to match their product category and sourcing scenario.
Import VAT (PPN)
VAT is calculated for reference purposes and helps estimate total tax exposure during importation.
For VAT registered businesses, import VAT is generally recoverable as an input tax credit and is therefore excluded from the final COGS calculation.
Import Income Tax (PPh 22)
The calculator also includes PPh 22 Import, which can be adjusted according to the importer’s tax status and applicable rate.
Compliance & Customs Risk Scenarios
Real world imports often encounter additional costs arising from customs inspections, regulatory approvals, and compliance requirements.
To help businesses plan more accurately, the calculator includes optional scenarios frequently encountered by Indonesian importers.
BPOM & SKI Documentation
Estimated costs associated with regulatory coordination, technical documentation review, and import approvals for products requiring BPOM oversight.
Red Channel Customs Inspection
Additional costs that may arise when shipments are selected for physical customs inspection and enhanced review.
Halal Compliance Management
Estimated compliance costs related to halal documentation, registration, and strategic preparation under Indonesia’s evolving halal requirements.
Surveyor Report (LS)
Potential costs associated with pre-border inspection and surveyor documentation requirements.
HS Code Classification Defense
Estimated professional representation costs when customs authorities challenge a product classification or require additional technical justification.
Extended Port Storage
Additional storage costs caused by documentation delays, customs inspections, or port congestion.
Laboratory Sampling & Testing
Potential expenses related to official product sampling and laboratory analysis conducted by customs or regulatory agencies.
Dangerous Goods (DG) Handling
Additional documentation, permits, and compliance costs for products classified as hazardous materials.
Why Calculate True COGS?
Many businesses focus only on product cost and freight when evaluating suppliers.
In reality, duties, taxes, compliance requirements, customs procedures, and operational risks often have a significant impact on the final landed cost.
Understanding True COGS helps businesses:
- Price products more accurately
- Forecast profit margins
- Reduce unexpected import costs
- Improve sourcing decisions
